• Watergate Bay — around 15 minutes north of Newquay. A wide, exposed beach with excellent surf and the famous Watergate Bay Hotel beach restaurant.
• Crantock Beach — around 10 minutes south. Quieter than the Newquay town beaches, backed by dunes, and excellent for families.

Surfing

Fistral Beach has several surf schools offering lessons for all ages and abilities. Watergate Bay is another good option for more experienced surfers. If you're bringing your own board, a camping airer back at the pitch is essential for drying wetsuits between sessions.

• Newquay Zoo — around 10 minutes from the site. A good half-day option for families with younger children, particularly on a rainy day.
• Blue Reef Aquarium — in Newquay town centre. Sharks, rays, and a good interactive display. Another solid wet-weather option.
• Screech Owl Sanctuary — around 15 minutes from Hendra near St Columb. Owls, meerkats, and other animals — popular with younger children.
• Newquay town centre — a short drive or bus ride. Good range of shops, restaurants, and the famous Newquay harbour.

Days Out Further Afield

• Eden Project — around 30 minutes from Hendra. Worth a full day. Book in advance in peak season.
• Lost Gardens of Heligan — around 40 minutes. Excellent for families and garden lovers.
• Padstow — around 30 minutes. Great for fresh fish and chips, the Camel Trail cycling route, and a wander around the harbour.
