Vehicle Awning Guide: How to Find the Right Awning for Your Campervan or Motorhome

Finding the right awning for your campervan, motorhome or other vehicle doesn’t have to feel like a maths test. Getting the attachment height right is the most important step for a good fit and a weather-resistant seal.

1. Measure your attachment height

Measure from the ground to the rail or point where the awning will attach, not to the highest point of the roof.

  • Awning rails or channels: On flat ground, measure vertically from directly below the rail to the bottom edge of the rail track.
  • Wind-out box awnings, such as Fiamma or Thule: Measure from the ground to the base of the lead bar or mounting track.
  • Roof-rack attachments: Measure straight up to the attachment bar or beam.

Measure on flat, level ground and with the vehicle loaded as it normally would be when travelling. Fuel, water and gear can affect vehicle height.

2. Match your measurement to the Vango height category

The accompanying vehicle height guide shows these Vango attachment-height categories:

  • Vango Low: 180–210 cm
  • Vango Mid: 215–255 cm
  • Vango Tall: 255–295 cm

Use the infographic as a quick visual reference, then compare your measurement with the stated attachment-height range for the specific awning you’re considering. The chart is guidance only. If your measurement falls between the ranges above, or close to a product’s limit, ask for a fit check rather than assuming it will fit.

3. Check the vehicle and awning fit

Vehicle type is a useful starting point, but versions, roof conversions and accessories can change the attachment height. Measure your own vehicle, then check the awning’s published range and connection method. If anything is unclear, confirm compatibility before ordering.

Vehicle awning FAQs

Should I measure the roof height?

No. Measure from the ground to the awning rail or actual attachment point. Overall roof height is not the measurement used to choose the fit.

Should the vehicle be loaded when I measure?

Yes. Measure it in the condition you normally travel in, since fuel, water and gear can affect its height.

What if my vehicle height falls between the Vango categories?

Check the specific awning’s stated attachment range and ask for a fit check if you’re unsure. Don’t assume neighbouring ranges overlap.

Newquay Camping Shop is at 4 Bamber House, Victoria, Cornwall, PL26 8LQ. The showroom is open Monday to Friday, with selected tents and awnings on display; the range on display changes weekly.
