How to Choose the Right Self-Inflating Mat

Depth matters most. The deeper the foam, the more comfortable the mat — and the better the insulation from cold ground. A 5cm mat is fine for summer camping; 10cm+ is noticeably more comfortable; 12–20cm is genuinely luxury territory.

Single or double? Single mats are ideal for solo campers or those who prefer their own mat. Double mats give couples a shared sleeping surface — look at the width carefully: 120cm is cosy, 150cm is spacious, and 200cm gives you a king-size feel.

Consider your setup. Drive-away awning or large family tent? A thicker double mat works brilliantly. If you're carrying your kit any distance, a lighter single mat makes more sense. Many campers also use a SIM on top of a camp bed for extra warmth in shoulder season.
